![]() 'Afghan Poppies' is a film about the part that friendship plays in helping us to survive and grow even when our world is being torn apart. The film focusses on the unexpected friendship between Nima Argandabi, a 39 year old Afghan refugee living in London with his three teenage children, and Annie Mills, a twentysomething Oxford-educated English woman. Filmed over an 18 month period from the War on Afghanistan to the War on Iraq, 'Afghan Poppies' candidly reveals Nima's struggle and the way in which Annie's friendship has helped him come to terms with being a refugee. It also shows how Nima has inspired Annie with his warmth and incredible courage. The son of a former Afghan army officer who fought as a Mujahed fighter in the 1980s before working for the UN, Nima's is a difficult life lived under extraordinarily demanding circumstances, made more bearable by an unusual friendship.
