Alternative carol singers in Manchester
On Saturday 20th December, the Manchester Palestine solidarity movement sang alternative Christmas carols outside Marks and Spencers, a well known UK food and clothing retailer. This store has become a target for the Palestine solidarity movement in Britain over the past few years because of its history of support for Zionism. Christmas is a time when many people in Britain are focussed on the Christmas story which took place in ancient Palestine. These alternative carols contain lyrics protesting about what is currently taking place in the "Holy Land" of today. They were written by Jewish people in Manchester for Palestinians. They were an attempt to raise key issues relating to the Palestinian catastrophe in a populist way with the majority of the British Christian population. While the carol singing was happening, other people staffed a Palestine solidarity stall in Manchester's main shopping area, Market Street, or handed out leaflets to people going into Marks and Spencers asking them to boycott the store. After Christmas, on 3rd January, the protest picket outside Marks and Spencers continued despite attempts to use the courts to stop it.
