The Sarayaku are an indigenous community in Ecuador's southern rainforest who are currently struggling to prevent their land being exploited by oil companies. Click on the box top right to watch their story.
For decades indigenous communities in Ecuador's rainforest have been threatened by international oil companies wanting to explore their lands. Many communities in the northern rainforest now suffer environmental and social problems caused by petroleum extraction. But the Sarayaku are resisting. For the Sarayaku, the idea of allowing their land to fall into the hands of corporations is unthinkable. The struggle, and survival, of the Sarayaku is growing and becoming known internationally.
This clip is from a documentary on the Sarayaku currently being made by Canadian film makers, Ibticeme Benalia and Laetitia Bertolino who have spent several months in the rainforest with them.
