Carbon offset?

I just learned that you can actually offset your own (and everybody else’s, if you so like) carbon emission. You can do this through organisations (I recommend not for profit org) where you pay and they offset the carbon emission through different actions, thereby you become carbon neutral, which off course is the ultimate goal! Though is it better to buy a couple of trees then invest that money in a project which makes our airplanes less environmental hazardous? Do we really want to let humans to be able to buy forgivness for their sins? I like the thought though that you are able to contribute. I for sure will read more on this subject in my personal bible (wikipedia) and thereafter take a decision.
