Everyone knows about Mann's "hockey stick". Here's a bit of science you can do yourself at home that highlights some of the nonsense around "man induced" warming. Michael Mann's "hockey stick" graph eliminated the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age and showed an almost constant global temperature for several centuries, followed by a dramatic temperature increase in 20th century. This started the big "scare" about global warming. You can actually access Mann's original data here: ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/contributions_by_author/jones2004/jonesmannrogfig2c.txt
It is very instructive to copy Mann's data from 1659 into Excel ... without doing any manipulation, data mixing or adjustment. Plot the data using Excel's scatter plot. You will get a very jagged graph that is hard to read. Now replot, applying some Excel smoothing using "Tools" "Data Analysis" (in doing so I am not implying that this is the best way to treat this data). This is the result (blue line):

( I have superimposed the previous best estimate for global temperatures, showing the Little Ice Age ). A very different picture to the one portrayed by Mann and the IPCC emerges !! It is no wonder that the most recent Nov, 2007 IPCC report http://www.ipcc.ch/ , now drops the "hockey stick" !!! The data shows us emerging from an ice age ... all without the help of man !
A committe has confirmed has the hockey stick is nonsense http://republicans.energycommerce.house.gov/108/home/07142006_Wegman_Report.pdf and it has been quietly dropped from the 2007 IPCC report.
This example shows just how easily data can be misused and believed unquestioningly by millions.
Recent rising carbon dioxide levels, especially man's tiny contribution to them http://icecap.us/images/uploads/200705-03AusIMMcorrected.pdf, are not sufficient to assert that this is a cause of global warming. The fact the ice core data shows CO2 levels trailing global temperature increases, suggests that rising CO2 levels are an effect, not a cause of warming. http://www.junkscience.com/Greenhouse/ . Not only should great care be taken analysing data, but we should be careful not to mix symptoms and causes.

climate, hockey-stick, warming
There has been so much bad science found in the whole climate change exercise, it's hard to rely on anything we're told. I don't understand how a body like IPCC could accept Mann's plot without independent substantiation of the data. Totally irresponsible, and the world is in turmoil because of it. I think a lot of the problem also is the media and bureaurocrats applying their own interpretation of scientific reports. Scientists also need to write their reports, and particularly summaries, keeping in mind that headline seekers will read what they can into them.
