Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth, is speaking right now at Bali. He is saying: 'This [UN process] is the only place in the world where these discussions can take place. We have to use this forum. There's no time now for changing the whole political process. [Governments need to see that] national interest is wrapped up in the global interest. The US is behaving as though they are passengers in the First Class part of a jet, who think that what happens in the Economy Class part of the jet is not going to affect them.'

Mark Lynas says: 'The US is holding up negotations without having a mandate to do it. Canada and Japan are only holding up the process because they are given cover by the US. Nothing can happen while Bush is still in White House. You might as well stop the clock till Bush is out of the way.'

Martin Hiller agrees it would be better to do negoatiaons without 'minions' of White House negotiating here.

But Tony says that the clock is ticking on climate change and points out that the new US administration will have less than a year before the Copenhagen meeting [2009] so the more that we can do now, the better.

But what I don't understand ist his: why can US citizens not get rid of Bush sooner if they see him as such an obstacle? Can't there be a Vote of No Confidence in him, if this is a problem for them? Is this a US media issue too, that the US media is being so weak in their presentation of climate change?

Mark Lynas says that the US media is transforming and points to Murdoch telling his empire to include content on climate change.

But I can't help thinking that the US media could do far, far more. Look at how they went all out after 9/11! Soft and tentative moves towards writing about climate change is not much of an effort.

Tony Juniper 'Bush has been exposed back home. It is a real political liability for him now. Write a blog now....'

Martin Hiller agrees: 'Writing a blog is a good idea. Everyone needs to write in. '
