OneClimate Island\'s new discussion space

We had a good, engaging gathering of people from all over in the new meeting space at OneClimate Islands in Second Life this past Thursday. The conversation got quite dense (only way I know to describe the interesting “layering” of conversations which seems to happen in SL chats, unlike any other chats I have been in) with a  lot of topics.

We started, as we try to do, with introductions and people’s curiosity about each other’s work immediately led us into conversations about coastal communities and then what sort of efforts are really needed for people to change and then a discussion on how much energy a SL user consumes. That one most intrigued me and I have yet to research it, but you can find it on the transcript page if you use your page finder to search for SUV. Someone suggested that the average SL user has an additional footprint as large as the average Brazilian’s. On the other hand, as we know, SL can alleviate huge amounts of travel while still allowing people to learn and collaborate. So is that a worthwhile trade-off? My gut says yes, but having more and more climate engineers for friends I know I need to get more specific data and clearer comparisons to be conclusive.

This coming Thurs we expect to have a short presentation by some people in the US on their project to bring a shareholders’ resolution to GM regarding car emissions.
