What is the best style of shredding for compost, the traditional long packaging style or the newer chopped up diamond shapes?
Hi All,
I am new here so hello all.
I am researching into buying a shredder for my home office to shred all my A4 printer paper for the compost bin. Having visited the office shop I see that one can shred to the traditional long streaky output that would be suitable for packaging and the newer style which seems to chop it up into little 1X2cm diamonds. Which type of shredded paper is best for the composting?

Good question. I do a lot of compost-making on my farm and the aim is to have as much surface area of the materials exposed to the moist air, fungi and bacteria which break down the cellulose of the paper (in your case), cardboard and decaying plant materials which you typically use as feeds for compost-making. I would guess that the long streaky type would be far superior, being springy and naturally aerated, than small diamonds which could easily go into an anaerobic mush. |

Thank you so much for your great answer.... and I can see the logic. The diamond cutter is going back to the shop where hopefully I will replace it with a streaky shredder !!!!
