The world is already suffering from global warming. A study by scientists at the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that 154,000 people die every year from the effects of global warming, from malaria to malnutrition. Children in developing nations are the most vulnerable. These numbers could almost double by 2020. The Antarctic ice ('South Pole') is already starting to melt but it will take thousands of years for this to be complete. If it did completely melt, sea levels would rise by around 50 metres everywhere. |
Apart from the direct deaths counted by WHO (see comment below), there are already many severe indirect effects leading to terrible suffering, especially in the global south - e.g. the increased number and severity of extreme weather events like floods, hurricanes and droughts.
