Why do the poor suffer more from climate change?

why are the climate changes brouhgt about by countries with high levels of technology felt more by low developed countries? kirabira(ug) CommentsTo answer you i do not think that the industries in First world countries have totally grasped the amount of pain and suffering that under developed countries go through. from exploitation of their resources to basic food in their stomache. If we look at it in totality when push comes to shove and i hope to God that we may never see that the poor will have nothing to run too because they simply will just not have the resources to fight such a fight. And this takes me back to my question of green consumerism being just another form of exploitation. Oxfam has loads of info on this,
There is a good video here: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/campaign/climate_change/hereandnow_video.html More info here:http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/campaign/climate_change/index.html (The FAQ's are pretty good)
Here is a bit of what they say:
Greater risk if you’re poor Though they contribute least to it, poor people will be hit first and hardest by climate change.
People living in poverty are more vulnerable for a number of reasons. For instance, they’re often forced to live in temporary settlements, on land prone to flooding, storms and landslides.
Making a living is already hard – so few will have savings to fall back on in an emergency. And poor diet, sanitation and health care also help spread infectious disease.
Partly because less developed countries are less able to cope with the effects because people are too pooor to adapt. It also happens that poor countries are often poor because the people who live in them already are living close to the edge in climate terms. Many such countries are already very hot and have unreliable rainfall so that food crops may fail partly or totally. The countries with high levels of development are generally located in temperate climates where there is more rain and temperatures are not so high. But there's a lot more to it than that! |
Going back to Bry's comment,I totally disagree with all that you are saying. People in less developed countries may have less according to the standars of the well developed but that does not mean that they are less capable of dealing with climate change. They are victims of circumstance i believe, they have been stripped of what they know and left with nothing short of nothing.
As for the close to the edge climate issue that a misconception, if i May Africa is well known for it poor people, but that does not mean that Africa cannot provide for its people, this continent is more than capable to provide for all it people and still have more laft over.
The reality of the situatio is that exploitation is on the rise and those that are unfortunate are excluded, which is a sad because opportunities are not equal enough.the notion that we are the way we are because we live in a hot spot so to say is just wrong, and the biggest misconception i've ever come across.
